Self Help: Before you call for service
Do It Yourself Tips:
Check to make sure your thermostat is set to heat if you want heating and cool if you want cooling.
Check to make sure the batteries in your thermostat are working. For best results battery changes are recommended every 6 months. One good way to remember to change your batteries is to co-ordinate the change with the clock change to and from daylight savings time.
Check to make sure the furnace's circuit breaker is on. First, check the breaker at the main electrical panel. If it's tripped, simply reset the breaker.
If operating an oil or propane fired appliance check to see if you have fuel in your tank.
Check to make sure the furnace's service switch is turned on.
Check to make sure your air filter is clean. Dirty air filters will reduce airflow causing equipment to work inefficiently or shut down on internal safety controls.
Furnaces vented with plastic pipes can have simple but serious “no heat” problems in the winter. If snow or ice blocks the plastic pipes, the furnace will not run. Keep the vent pipes clear, and check them if your furnace will not run. If the pipes are packed with snow or frost, use a hair dryer to thaw out the buildup
If none of these works it's time to call a professional.
